Australia To Crack Down On Cheap Tobacco With New National Plan
Australia is to crack down on tobacco products with a new national strategy unveiled Thursday by Health Minister Michael Wooldridge.
He said Australia's states and territories and the federal government have committed to the six-pronged program.
In particular, the strategy promotes not smoking, reduces availability and supply of tobacco products, reduces tobacco promotion, tightens tobacco regulations, reduces exposure to passive smoke and strengthens community action, he said.
"This is the first time all Australian tobacco jurisdictions have joined together with a common aim of reducing the harm caused by tobacco," Wooldridge said in a statement.
Japan Tobacco May Be Blocked in Canada From Selling Top Brand Japan Tobacco Inc., the No. 3 cigarette maker, may change some labeling in Canada cigarettes and could be blocked there from selling its top brand after a regulator vowed to ban such words as ``mild'' and ``light'' on cigarette packages.
Canadian Health Minister Allan Rock last week said labeling with such words misleads consumers into thinking the cigarettes are safer than those without them, newspapers reported. The Tokyo- based maker of Mild Seven cigarettes, which has registered its top brand for the Canadian market, has no immediate plans to sell it there, said Japan Tobacco spokesman Atsuro Ito.
Still, if it does sell Mild Seven cigarettes in Canada, the company may be forced to use a different name, and it might have to change labels for Export A and other brands it already markets there. New restrictions could come as a blow to Japan Tobacco, which is relying on diversification and overseas growth in a bid to overtake Philip Morris Cos. and British American Tobacco Plc, even as the percentage of Japanese consumers who smoke declines.
``This is a negative factor mid- and long-term,'' said Keiichiro Goda, a fund manager who oversees 3 billion yen in Japanese equities at Kokusai Asset Management Co., including an undisclosed number of Japan Tobacco shares. Banning such words as ``mild'' from packaging will limit the company's growth potential in foreign markets, he said.
Japan Tobacco hopes to negotiate a settlement under which certain words won't be banned; rather, the company would prefer new information requirements
