Reynolds was generous with his wealth, and his family and corporate successors followed his example after his death in 1918. In part because of Reynolds philanthropy, Winston cigarettes, Salem cigarettes -- its own name tied to a couple of cigarette brands -- still features several roads, schools, buildings and even an airport with the Reynolds name, though the company finally relinquished its place as the city's largest employer in the mid 1990s.

AUTO RACING: Winston to pull its name at 'Dega
Winston to quit smoking at 'Dega
The Winston 500 is down to its last puff at Talladega Superspeedway.
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., which for 31 years has stamped the name of its Winston brand of cigarettes on the race, is close to stubbing out its sponsorship. The Winston 500 on Oct. 15 looms as the last likely to carry that name.
Officially, RJR has not dropped its sponsorship of the Winston cigarettes 500, only saying publicly that the situation is being evaluated. RJR, however, has informed Talladega management that the track is free to look for another sponsor.
"We're assuming, for all intents and purposes, that they are out," said Brett Shelton, the speedway's vice president and general manager.
The move is seen as a shift in focus by Winston cigarettes toward its racing promotions and not as a cuttback of its support of NASCAR. Just this year, RJR increased its points fund for the Winston cigarettes Cup standings to $10 million. "It's obvious we are committed to NASCAR Winston Cup racing," said Darnell.

Good riddance Winston cigarettes Cup. It was a sponsorship agreement made in hell more than 30 years ago as the spawn of the powerful cheap tobacco industry in this country and now, fortunately, it is dead.
After all, some tobacco advertising is just wrong and every year since Reynolds got involved since 1972, tobacco has gotten constant and favorable publicity.
Did the Winston cigarettes Cup and NASCAR’s massive popularity actually convince kids to start smoking? Who knows? But how surprised would anyone be if it did?
Still better late than never, I guess.
