Industry News: Make way for 'diet smoke'

Tobacco giants add chemicals to cheap cigarettes to reduce the smell and visibility of second-hand smoke, hoping this will ease the objections of non-smokers, according to research published on Tuesday.

The cigarette additives mainly worked by transforming some of the visible smoke into an invisible gas by burning the cigarette at a lower temperature.

They did not eliminate the overall volume of cigarette emissions or get rid of its cancer-causing components, the authors say.

Scant evidence was found that the firms tested to see whether these cigarette additives could be dangerous for health, they add.

This is important, because one of the by-products of tobacco smoke is a carcinogenic substance called TSNA, which is 20 times more present in second-hand smoke than in first-hand smoke breathed in by the smoker, they say.
