Industry News: LETTER: Linkage of smoking to pleasure

PLEASE refer to colourful advertisements in print and electronic media about the boat of a tobacco company reaching Karachi soon. This particular tobacco company tried to organize a similar publicity event in Bangladesh last year but failed because of the strong protest by the people there. The Bangladesh High Court later banned the boat entry into the country. The company has now planned a similar function in Karachi where famous pop singers will take part in a musical concert. Invitation cards of this function are being distributed to the teenagers.

The tobacco company is trying to link smoking cigarettes to pleasure, entertainment and fun.

In Western countries strict anti-tobacco laws prevent tobacco companies from targeting the youth but in Pakistan these companies are free to use all methods to entice the entire population.

The government of Pakistan seems addicted to the tobaccoand cigarette money and is not interested in taking anti-tobacco measures?

I urge our popstars to refrain from promoting tobacco and cigarettes.

I would also like to request the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court to take suo motu action against the organizers.
