Industry News: Not all tobacco users young today

Since I was a child when I started smoking, I would like to know why there is not a program to aid adults who were addicted as children to tobacco.

The taxes on tobacco should more than cover us, too. I feel discriminated against because I learned that the only programs now available are for the youth of today, when the youth of yesterday are the ones who were really harmed by the tobacco industry.

I would be interested in an accounting of what is done with the monies the cigarette companies are required to pay the state of West Virginia.

That’s the conclusion of the 2000 New Hampshire Youth Tobacco Survey, which earlier this year solicited the tobacco habits of 1,525 students in seventh and eighth grades from among 40 public schools.

"Results from this survey show that more than one in seven students in grades seven and eight use tobacco," according to Dr. Andrew Pelletier, a chronic disease epidemiologist with the Office of Community and Public Health at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

Although the survey spelled out that 15 percent of seventh- and eighth-graders are smoking, it also indicated that almost half hope to quit.
