Industry News: Fines for smoking?

Minors who are caught with cigarettes could be subject to a $25 fine under a new regulation being proposed by the city health department.

The regulation would make possession of a tobacco product illegal for anyone under age 18.

Attleboro Tobacco Control Director Elaine LaRoche said the rules will apply throughout the city, not just city-owned property.

She added that teen smoking at the Wednesday Night Markets in the downtown business district will be targeted.

Cigarette smoking is addictive and there is no such thing as a "safe cigarette," David Greenberg, a senior vice president of the Philip Morris company, yesterday told a public committee on reducing damage from smoking headed by Judge Alon Gillon.

In contrast, immediately after the committee was established, the Israeli cigarette company Dubek informed then health minister Shlomo Benizri that it did not recognize the committee's work, as its findings and recommendations were a forgone conclusion.

Most of Greenberg's remarks referred to the issue of smoking among youth. Sources close to the committee said that from the outset, it was almost certain that the panel would recommend a ban on smoking among youth, so that Philip Morris's readiness to help work toward that end was a "logical tactical step."
