Salem
cigarettes
Salem is brand of cigarettes introduced in 1956 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as the first filter-tipped menthol cigarette. Its name (along with that of the Winston brand) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered.
SALEM was one of the first cigarette brands to establish the menthol category. SALEM is today one of the leading menthol brands, with a key presence in Asian markets. SALEM is sold in over 30 countries. PLEASE NOTE: Salem is now availabe only in Box. All Soft Packs have been discontinued by the manufacturer.
There are now two main varieties of Salem cigarettes made in USA: Green Label and Black Label. The Green Label is marketed as being more smooth-tasting, while the Black Label is said to be stronger or "harsher" tasting.

Winston-Salem (NC) Journal: Tobacco deal may cost N.C. billions, economist says
Cigarette-price increase could lead to loss of 9,000 jobs, quota cut
The price increase alone would also cause a decline in cigarettes and tobacco consumption that could lead to a permanent cut of 11 percent in the amount of cheap tobacco that farmers are allowed to grow each year, said A. Blake Brown, an agricultural economist at N.C. State University.
''We could see USA cigarettes consumption declining by up to 28 percent over the next two to four years due to price increases of around 70 cents a pack,'' Brown told tobacco growers at a conference at N.C. State. ''We're going to see some decline here as a result of this cigarette price increase.''
