Industry News: DUNFORD: Oktoberfest Ain't Smokin' cigarettes
Tho the beer tents are outdoors, those who do not care enough about their health to fill their bodies only with Bavarian cold cuts and suds must leave the 18 Festhallen to smoke cigarettes. Out, damn smokers! Hey, more brewskis here! And home-made Spatzle! Was that a tuba or did my gut just howl Oompah?
As a non-smoker, I say about time. Thank you, city councillors. Thank you, politically correct - the social zealots who always know best. Too long has Oktoberfest been loud, fun and silly - one last roar before winter. Recognize it as the World-Class Sports Competition it is. Oktoberfest demands a healthy, smoke-free venue. Oh lordy yes. And with Oktoberfest newly smoke-free, old records will be broken. Perhaps - with this new social conscience - judges will choose a really ugly woman with no bazooms to be Miss Oktoberfest. Fair is fair.
Industry News: Tobacco Companies Lose Court Bid To Delay Tougher Warnings On Cigarette Packs
Tobacco companies must meet a December deadline ordering them to put larger and more graphic warnings on cigarette packages, a Quebec court ruled on Wednesday. The new warnings will increase the size of health alerts to about 50 per cent of the package, up from 30 per cent, and require grim colour photos of body parts diseased because of tobacco use.
The ruling by Justice Danielle Grenier of Quebec Superior Court was only confined to the delay request and did not address the tobacco firms' attack on the constitutionality of the law adopted by the House of Commons last June.
"At this point, that will remain without a response," she wrote of the part of the case which is expected to be heard early next year.
"At this point, what is known is that the regulations, while imperfect, were adopted in the interest of the citizens."
