Industry News: Gas station tobacco suspension

The Board of Health Tuesday suspended the tobacco-selling permit of an Easthampton Road gas station for five days after finding it was in violation of the law prohibiting tobacco sales to people under 18. It was the fourth time within nine months.

The board voted 2-0 to suspend the permit of Northampton Citgo, following its latest violation June 21.

Paul Cahill, who manages the Citgo station for the Worcester-based C.K. Smith Co. and appeared at the hearing before the health board Tuesday, said the company has tried to make sure cigarettes are not sold to under-age customers.

He said employees are required to learn the policy on tobacco sales and are taught how to use a scanner to read the age and date of birth of license holders. Still, he said the company has not been able to ensure that its employees ask for identification every single time from people seeking to buy cigarettes.

Huge Cigarette Shipment Seized

Prosecutors are investigating the attempted smuggling out of Russia of $2.5 million worth of cigarettes, which were seized in a port west of St. Petersburg over the weekend.
A shipment of cigarettes bearing the Regal and Super Kings trademarks, but lacking excise stamps, was seized Sunday in the commercial port of Lomonosov. The Regal and Super Kings brands belong to the British-based Imperial Tobacco Group.
The contraband was apparently bound for Britain's black tobacco market. It is now in warehouses belonging to Northwest Customs. The cigarettes, which are believed to be counterfeit, were discovered in the hold of a ship.
