Industry News: When the package is the message / Comely containers for tobacco products are back in style

I gather that graphic designer Andre Letellier has come up with elegant cardboard covers to slip over cigarette packages, obliterating the big, graphic health warnings the government has forced tobacco companies to put on their products.

When I was smoking, I always regretted that changes in fashion had precluded me from using the handsome cigarette cases I inherited from various members of my family.

My solution was simple. I took my father's silver cigarette case off the shelf and polished it. It was finely made and attractive, and I'd been looking for an excuse to carry it for 35 years. In 1994 my government finally gave it to me.

Three years later I stopped smoking. I regret it mainly because I had to retire my father's handsome cigarette case again.

If manufacturers were smart, they would reverse the trend in packaging that began 70 years ago. If they started selling their products in awkward and flimsy containers, customers would soon switch them to their own cigarette cases. Or perhaps utilize Mr. Letellier's designer covers.
