Industry News: Students Smoking Less

High school students are smoking less than they used to, a new national survey concludes.

But the national decline, which is reflected in New Hampshire numbers, isn’t dramatic, nor can those who worry about such issues breathe a sigh of relief yet.

"We haven’t won the battle," says state epidemiologist Andrew Pelletier.

Students and school nurses at several area high schools say smoking among teens has reached a plateau. More aren’t picking up the habit, they say, but many are still lighting up.

Students who don’t smoke say they avoid the bathrooms at school because they smell like cigarette smoke. In addition, ashes cover the toilet seats and butts fill the toilets.

"I’m pretty good at holding it," says Nashua High School senior Holly Krehel.
